Ground Insurgence

The approach to the site is to uproot the Cine Impero, creating clear points of entry into this reconfigured space. Whereas the Cinema originally fed images to its viewers in a top-down manner, now professional image-makers and locals are creating their own images bottom-up. The building becomes human-scale, rather than a machine operating over the masses. In this initial figure-ground, you can see the intentions to penetrate the Cine Impero at two critical points, preceded by a wide entryway. The circulation through the building is completely redirected now, it cuts diagonally through the building, completely disregarding the strict circulation of Cine Impero, which was characteristic of Fascist buildings. And whereas Cine Impero, among other fascist buildings, treated circulation as a tool of management to control the movement of masses according to efficiency and order, our new forms celebrate and design the circulation as architecture.
